Poor, faithful Marianne ... She has led so many lives, and has suffered through her reiterations with remarkable stoicism. Nothing she did for me was good enough. I railed against her when she was a road bike with drop bars. And though things improved with upside-down Albatross bars, the poor creature continued to be verbally abused for being "uncomfortable," "unstable" and "twitchy". Faced with the prospect of redundancy, Marianne shed bitter tears and begged me to take drastic measures:
I shoe-horned this 32mm tire onto my rear wheel last week (Thanks, Karen!) but I had to ditch the fender on the back. It just wasn't going to fit ... It'll be nice to get a front fork that can take something wider than 28mm, too. Next thing you know, I'll be year-rounding this bike with cyclocross tires. Of course, just as soon as I got rid of my rear fender, the rain picks up again. I rigged up my mountain bike's old mudflap a different way this time. Photos coming soon. It keeps the road
The name of this bicycle caught my attention, but the design held my attention. The Paper Bicycle isn't made of paper. Scottish engineer Nick Lobnitz, the bike's inventor, originally wanted to call it the Wallpaper Bicycle, for reasons to be ...
I was reading the paper today and came across this picture ... "Gee," I thought, "that guy sure looks familiar!" ... "Why," I shouted, "that guy looks just like Bashar al-Assad!" ... I turned to look at my fridge magnet of Bashar Assad. (What? doesn't everybody have a fridge magnet of their favorite middle-eastern dictator?) And there he is, in all his I'm-in-over-his-head benevolence ... So it turns out the first picture isn't the Syrian President but rather Bruce Ratner. He just waiting for
I know that several of my readers are hunting for vintage mixtes at the moment - intending to use them as sportier alternatives to their main transport bikes. Early summer is a good time to buy a vintage mixte, as many are on the market. But before getting swept up in the romance of those twin lateral stays and buying the first attractive mixte you see, it could be helpful to know what to look for - lest you end up with a bicycle that is un-ridable at your skill level, or with a bicycle where
On the morning of Thursday, June 10, be sure to hop on your bike a few minutes earlier to join Planet Bike and the Wisconsin Bike Federation for the 4th Annual Bacon on the Bike Path! This is a free event and is a part of the week-long Bike to Work Week festivities ...
Just a few days before I head to Goodland to begin BAK. My bike's at the LBS for a tune-up, and I've been working on my own tune-up seriously for a couple months. Lots to do before I leave, maybe one more post if I get a chance. Then I'll be incommunicado all next week as I roll across Kansas. I hope to have some good pictures and better stories to tell when I get home ... I'm also hoping this will inspire me to keep on riding through June and July in anticipation of CRMBT in August. By the way,
I have to take a minute and say thank you to everyone for their support ... Even after an extended hibernation it's great to see people back ... To be honest, I sat there this winter (while eating bon bons) wondering if I wanted to continue writing on this blog. It's the home of my more cynical thoughts, and while I have them often, sometimes I'm too lame or lazy to actually write them down. Starting a fun blog, and then not working on it, is almost like signing up for the MS150 and then not
I am being asked lots of questions about the Wald Rear Folding Baskets, so here are some details and close-up pictures: ... The Wald folding baskets are perceived as practical and inexpensive, but unglamorous. People tend to put them on their old 3-speeds and beater bikes, but rarely will you find them a "nice" bike. I too would have been reluctant to install them on the Pashley. But having used these in Austria on Jacqueline, I saw that they can look elegant on the right bicycle ... Anyhow,
